Orisha Warriors: Astral Initiation

I can feel that Warrior spiritual energy or aché flowing in my veins. I am not afraid of anything because I now have them, as well as my Archangels by my side to lead, guide and defend me. Even today, a barrier I had faced for a long time crumbled in the face of these active forces of nature in assignment in my life.

After I came back from my guided meditation experience with my bestie Sabra, I found myself feeling very sleepy. I laid on my couch back at home and sort of half asleep began to astral travel. I found myself in the midst of a celebration of sorts. The Warrior Orishas, Echu Elegguá, Ogún, Ochossi and Osun came forward dancing, each in their fierce warrior plumage, headdress and colors proudly on display. They also held their tools and weapons in their hands and began to fiercely combat all of the negative spirits in my house. Interestingly enough, several negative entities lurked within my new sofa and loveseat which I had just acquired from a relative of mine. I knew I should have saged it for it had sat up collecting dust in their home and also by a doorway. Doorways are where spirits frequently come through.

Anyway, they danced and fought and fought and danced. Then when all was well the Goddess Oshun came forward in her yellow dress, wearing a great crown of gold and plumage. She then crowned me with a crown of my own and the Warriors and she danced in celebration around me. I was very excited and felt very loved and protected. The Warriors felt like older brothers all there to offer me their strength. As I awoke and rose up the issues I had from a past relationship seemed to no longer trouble me and I felt great strength in spirit! I could feel the Warrior Orishas still with me as they had laid claim to always protect me,my house, my family and anyone I wished from harm.

Amazingly, I knew very little about the male Orishas before this happened and sorta mistrusted male Gods in general. I most especially mistrust any gods that are violent and ask for blood sacrifices. But I have since learned that they fight not flesh and blood but energetically. They are like great guardian angels, and they protect and heal as well. I am pleased they are with me and am going to create little altars in my home in their honor today. So what happened to me? I believe I was chosen by the Orishas to receive my Warriors, and I did so astrally because I am a Shamanic Witch.

I also know through esoteric communication with them that I have already been crowned in my previous lives and am an Ifa High Priestess. If I want to go through the initiations again I may, but when you are crowned you are so for all of your lives. It was no wonder that I recognized each of them by name! And they gathered around me, as if I was there long lost daughter.  Even Goddess Oshun and Yemoja in another of my previous astral travels rejoiced when they realized who I am. It is an honor and a blessing to be seen as such. It is also a great responsibility, to them, my family and the planet.

While the power of the Orishas is legendary, one doesn’t become initiated for power or for money. Instead initiations in Santeria help the person to move forward in their lives, often in specific ways and impart the aché or spiritual power of the Orishas into your life. There are a number of levels of initiation, and the knowledge you gain deepens as well as the commitment expected of you by the Orishas and your Godparents. First a person will generally receive their Guerreros or warriors and/or their ilekes or their Necklaces. Later, they may receive La Mano de Orula or Hand of Orula. When the person is ready, they may be go through the kariocha or Full Initiation as a Santera or Santero if that is their path in life. Finally, if the person’s sign in their Mano de Orula calls for it they may be fully initiated as a Babalawo (Father of the Secrets) and serve as a High Priest in the religion.

Guerreros (Warriors)

In the initiation of the Guerreros or Warriors, you actually receive several Orishas: Echu Elegguá, Ogún, Ochossi and Osun. They live by your front door and will need to be taken care of every Monday as well as whenever they ask for something via divination. As your knowledge deepens in the religion, the more you will be able to work with these Orishas. Over time, you will be taught how to give obí or coconut to your Guerreros to ask them simple yes or no questions.

Oh something I forgot, when I came to my friend Sabra’s house, I produced my beautiful crystals I had brought with me for my astral meditation with her. (I brought them not knowing we would do that, but Spirit always leads me correctly) Anyway. I also produced a cowrie shell. She nearly jumped out of her skin when she saw this in my hand. She said,”Don’t you realize what you hold? It is a tool of divination. The cowrie shell is the mouthpiesce of the Orishas.”  I don’t know why but cowrie shells have always found their way to me. This is one my son brought to me. I do not know where it came from, but my youngest son often brings me great treasures. I also find many on my own. I have received feathers of many different colors and sizes, crystals, (found a crystal on our walk  and she found a heart), money and cowrie shells.

Well, I am not sure if I am going to go through all of the initiations again in this life, but I am definitely going to get my Elekes.

The Ilekes or Necklaces (Collares in Spanish)

Receiving your Ilekes or Necklaces puts you under the protection and blessings of your Godparents’ Orishas and makes you a part of their Ilé or Orisha House. The Ilekes are sacred and are the banners of the Orishas and act as a sign of the Orishas presence and protection. The preparations usually take several days to a week as several complex ceremonies are involved. The ceremony of receiving your ilekes itself takes several hours as it is made up of several rites, and the new initiate should be prepared to ‘make a day of it’ as they will be expected to go home and rest for the remainder of the evening. In many ways this ceremony is an equivalent to the ceremony of Baptism practiced by some religions. It is the ceremonial entrance into our religion and into a new life as a follower of the Orishas. Only Santeras and Santeros can perform this ceremony and this ceremony cannot be performed by Babalawos.

I do not see myself becoming a High Priestess but I do look forward to learning more about my spiritual heritage with Sabra, my friend and mentor, and a life full of devotion and respect to my ancestors,my Orishas, my Angels and my God.

Sunshine Blessings and Angel Kisses,

Luv, Ostara
